COURSING.

ANNUAL WATERLOO FIXTURE. (From Oue Specjial Reporteb.) OMAKAU, March 30. The New Zealand Waterloo coursing fixture for the 1918 season was commenced at Omakau on Saturday in fine weather, axid before an attendance of several hundred spectators, many of whom were visitors from various parts of the dominion. The leefcing was conducted by the Central Ota«o Coursing Club, and was held under the auspices and in accordance with the rules of the National Coursing Association of New Zealand. The rain that fell early in tho week had put the ground in good order., there being a spring in the turf. The pr-n----cipal event on the programme is, of course, the Waterloo Cup itself, and the dogs taking part will pass on from that through the various stages until the Waterloo Purse and Plate events are also decided. The committee of the Central Otago Club decided that, if possible, the fixture will be brought to a conclusion on Monday afternoon. It should be mentioned that the people of both Omakau and Ophh played an important part in making possible the holding of the fixture in Central Otago, as they eubscribed the sum of £SO to that end. A word of praise is also due to the Railway Department for the admirable arrangements which it made for the conveyance of the dogs to Omakau, these being the subject of much favourable comment, and giving genuine satisfaction. The fixture this year is being held a good deal earlier than usual, as the Central Otago Coursing Club was' the only one to i-Pply for it, and could only undertake to run it at Easter. Nevertheless owners throughout the dominion, and, strange to say, particularly from the north, have given generous support to tho programme, this being evidenced by the fact that 41 dogs are represented in tho Waterloo Cup event, as against 44 last year, when tho coursing was held at Wanganui. Included in the competitors are last year's cup winner (Black Pirate) and also "the runner-up (Seaplane). The following figures show how widely are the entrants distributed:— Invercargill b, Winton 2, Central Otago 3.. Canterbury 3, New Plymouth, Wanganui 13, Dunedin 8, Nelson 2, Wellington 1, Blenheim J. It is a matter for some regret that the two clubs belonging to this province are not better represented, and with so strong a team in the field from Wanganui there seems to be every prospect that the forthcoming cup winner will be located in the North Island. Tho meeting is, of course, being conducted on a plumoton, and tho whole of the arrangements so far give every indication of 'working smoothly and satisfactorily Mr H Divers (secretary of the New Zealand Association) is in attendance as 'the onicial representative of the National Council, Mr II Irving (of Invercargill) is judge, and Mr J. Ronald has "been entrusted with tho duties of slipper. Some remarkably good courses were seen to-day, the hares mostly proving a strong, vigorous lot. and there being very few kills. The judge gave his decisions promptly, and they "appeared to meet with general approval. The soort was of a very high standard, and exceptionally good performances were recorded in tho Waterloo Cup by Kingi Poi, Black Pirate, Live Wire, and Norman Tuckfield. The first round of this event was completed, and the loser? then went on with the opening round oi the Purse event. The results j},ro as follow : WATERLOO CUP. - Winner, £SO and silver cup (presented by Mr 3. S Irwin); second dog, £2O; third dog, £5; three dogs at. £i each, and five dogs at , £3.' First Round. The New Zealand Waterloo fixture,, oonr ducted by the Central Otago Coursing Club, was concluded to-day in ideal weather. The sport was of an exceptionally high standara, the hares being even stronger than on. Saturday. The third round of the Cup event produced two surprises, Black [Pirate and Kingi Poi both going out. The former was last year's cup winner, but. was beaten, by Full Hand fairly decisively. Kihgi Poi was the Now Plymouth fanoy, bub did not reproduce Saturday's form, and was beatca by Millicent, who ran remarkably well, Another good course was between Norman Tuckfield and Wheatley's Delight, the former showing remarkable speed and working cleverly. In the next two rounds Millicent, a brilliant young bitch, beat both Liya Wire and Norman Tuckfield, thereby spoiling the interest in the final, as Full Hand, who reached the final on a bye, belongs to) the same owners, Messrs Jackson and Howard, who therefore divided first and second prize money. The same position occurred in tho Purs® ~ event, Forward March and Seaplane, owned by Mrs W. Clarke, Wanganui, reaching the final togethor. The Plato was won by Mjf P. Mason's Bright Alice, after a poor course with Oamaru Brick. Results:— WATERLOO CUP. Third Round. Milliocnt beat KAngi Poi. Live Wire beat Black Hush. Pull Hand beat Black Pirate.
