CITY POLICE COURT
Saturday, Maech 23. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) A "Pitiful Casd. —A young woman named Euphemia Crisp and a girl named Thurza Carpenter Cameron were charged with being idle and disorderly and having insufficient lawful means of support. Both pleaded not guilty.—A married sister of the girl Cameron stated that the accused was 'for some time under her control. She would not do as she was told, however, and left witness, She kept late hours and bad .company. She was only 19 years of age.—Constable Beer said he-had interviewed the accused Cameron and warned her tc ; . earn an honest living. The accused Crisp waitress, and the two were to be about the streets, sometimes in eo«v,p an y with returned soldiers and vaudeville arrets. He had repeated his warnings -to them tra-*-"" several occasions. They laughed at tho' warning of the senior sergeant. —Sergeant Boulton gave evidence of seeing the accused about the streets at night and as to disorderly conduct one night in the houso where they were staying.—Crisp gave evidence denying tho charges against her.— Cameron, who was the most aggressive and . self-possessed in tho box, said sho had got work as assistant housekeeper at \\uiidham. She saved her earnings there and ej;;:<> buck to town, since when sho had not t' on ablo to get/work. To Sub-inspector Mathosdn she said sho had had a college education up to senior free placo standard. She strongly resented the suggestion that Crisp had led her astray.—The Magistrate said* tho evidence left no doubt as to the mode of lifi of these girls, and each would be convicted. —Tho Sub-inspector asked that .the two be separated.—The Magistrate "said it was extremely regrettable to see such a welleducated, intelligent girl as Cameron with so much assurance in court. The accused were ordered to bo detained for 12 months' reformatory treatment with the Salvation Amy. Cameron to bo sent to Christchurch and Crisp to bo detained in Duncdjn.
