COST OF LIVING
NEW ZEALAND'S ENVIABLE POSITION. In an address in Wellington on Tuesday evening, tho Prime Minister quoted! the following interestipg figures showing New Zealand's position in regard to the cost of living as compared with that in other countries: — Percentage of increase in the cost of living, taken from tho British Board of Trade Labour Canadian Labour Gazette, Commonwealth Labour Bulletin, and the monthly abstract of statistics (Government Statistician, New Zealand): — Austria, 211.6; Germany, 110.5; United Kingdom, 102.0- Norway, 144.0; Sweden, 77.0; Holland, 91.0; United States, 41.0; Canada, 44.0; Australia, 29.0; Now Zealand, 27.4. Since the war ' commenced sugar has been dealt with by arrangement between the .Government and the Colonial Sugar Company. This arrangement ensures the people of New Zealand getting sugar cheaper than any other country in the world, as the following quotations will show':—New Zealand. £2l per ton; Vic toria. £29 7& 6d; South Australia, £29 17s 6d: Western Australia, £3l: Great Britain. £4l 12s 6d; New York. £29.
