TWO CLERGYMEN ASSAULTED. FEILI>iNU, February 14. The' Rev. Howard Elliott held a meeting here last night, when a branch of the Protestant Political Association was formed. Though admission was by ticket only, a number of opponents were present. They interjected., and were removed by the police. After the meeting the Rev. G. Stockwell (the chairman] was assaulted while returning home. He was considerably bruised, but not seriously hurt. • HASTINGS, February 16. The Rev. Howard Elliott addressed a* meeting of about 200 people here last night. There was *no disturbance of any kind, and it was unanimously resolved to form a Hastings branch of the Protestant Political Association. (Fhou Ouh Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, February 14. A gang of butchers from the freezing works greatly interrupted the mooting, their intention apparently being to prevent Mr Elliott from speaking. When they were put out stones wore thrown through the windows. At the conclusion of the meeting the Rev. Mr Elliott left by the back door, and consequently the crowd of roughs missed him, but the Rev. Messrs Stockwell and Miller, who left by the side door, were assaulted in the street. Mr Miller was knocked daws and kicked, and Mr Stockwell wae either struck by a fist or a stone, but neither was seriously injured. The police wero at the meeting, and were expecting the chief speakers to come out at the front door; consequently they wero not able to bo present to prevent the assault.
