AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Taihoa. The only item of interest during the present week was the holding of the annual mooting of the Whangarei Club. This fixture is not by any means recognised as one of the leading country events, but generally a good crowd of Aucklanders make the trip, and the meeting this week was no exception. The Whangarei Cup was secured by the veteran Royal Irish, who won in good style after a close finish with the favourite, Lady Energy. Later in the afternoon Royal Irish won the Publicans’ Handicap, beating Blue Cross a nose. The latter should win a race with a stronger horseman. Glad Tidings,, who must be nearly old enough to be entitled to the pension, brought off a couple of surprises at Whangarei, when ho won two sprint events. Ho showed a good deal of his one-time dash, and looks like paying his way at the small fixtures, providing his trainer can keep the chestnut sound. J. Chisholm expected to win a couple of races at Whangarei with Coleraine, but a third and a second was the best the gelding could do. Coleraine has boon troubled with corns, and will prefer the going soft to show his best. The Hurdles at Whangarei saw three old stagers in Ngatoa, Almadale, and St. Louis competing for the stake, the first-named winning. Not one of the trio would be accepted as a gift. As expected, none of the Auckland horses were sent south to compete at Trentham. The Takapuna. J.O. summer meeting is fixed for Saturday and Tuesday next, but at the time of writing the acceptances are .not due, and it is therefore difficult to know the strength of the fields, particularly as quite a number of the horses figure in more than one event.

T. Chaplin, who only recently had his license handed hack to him, rode a couple of winners at tho Northern Wairoa meeting. Chaplin will ride both on tho flat and over fences this season.

So far nothing' definite has boon arrived at as to whether Cynic will bo taken to Australia. Cynic has received all tho weight he is entitled to in the Takapuna Cup. Soultnne was offered for sale by auction last week, but only 50gs was offered, and ho was passed in, tho reserve being 80a-s. Soultane has been one of the .greatest disappointments to backers that has raced in Auckland for a long time. One of the picks of tho Tnknpuna Cup is Colonel Soult, who is exceptionally well '.rented at 8.4. Re rnn second in the St. Andrew'* Handicap at Takapuna in November with 8.6. and at tho Aueklnnd_ Cup meet'nee he ran second in the Christmas Handicap with 8.7. His most dangerous opponent at Takapuna may be Mullingar. who ran a sterling race in. the Auckland Cup for a mile and a-half, and tho pace wps right on all through. The disappointing Fisher will be given another chance to make good, as he Is engaged in hurdle events at Takapuna; but

tho son of Maniapoto a wretched jumper that backers are""now very chary of entrusting him with their coin. However, it might be as well to remember that horses sometimes run very differently on a strange track, and, with the fences not quite so formidable as at Ellcrslie, I am inclined to think that Fisher will win.

The person who sets out to essay backing the winners of the programme is certainly taking the shortest cut to the Bankruptcy Court, and for that reason I am pot going to comment on the whole of the events, as it may only lead to some of my readers being forced to call a meeting of creditors. However, I can go this far and mention that Shining Light. All Talk, and Carmen Sylva will bo running at tho meeting. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON' 'SUMMER MEETING.
