LUMSDEN.
January 2. —Good weather is being experienced here for the holiday season, and the township is suffering- a mild invasion by fishermen. The river is in splendid fishing order, and good catches reward the patience of the wielders of the rod. Fish aie in good condition, and specimens from 2lb to 6lb are quite common. The visiting anglers are very pleased with the local sport. Fatal Accident.—The news of the fatal motor accident on the Te Anau road caused a painful sensation throughout the district, and the deepest sympathy is expressed with the relatives of the unfortunate gentleman who sustained fatal injuries. Death.—A very sudden death occurred here last Tuesday. Mr James Clearwater, a muchrespected farmer at Castle Rock, was found dead in a small paddock adjoining his house. Mir Clearwater had been in indifferent health for some time, but his decease was totally unexpected by his family, to whom heartfelt sympathy is expressed. Two sons of the deceased are away on active service. The funeral took place in Invercargill on Friday, and the popularity of the fate Mr Clearwater was evinced'by the large attendance of mourners. Personal. —The Hon. Sir ¥m. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, paid a flying visit to Immsden yesterday on his way through to the lake, and was met by a number of his supporters, who were pleased to see the hon. gentleman looking so fresh and hearty. Road to Te Anau.—Considerable work ha 3 been done by the gang of men put on by the Public Works Department in putting the Maraioa River back into its ■usual channel, and thereby improving the road to Te Ainau.
