CHURCH PARADE. On Sunday, at the Oval, the Senior Cadets of Dunedin paraded at &.45 a.m.,. the various companies being formed up as a battalion en masse. There was a finemuster of over 1200 cadets, and Lieutenant W. S. M'Crorie, cadet area officer, was in charge. The parade moved off at 10.15, each of the units going to different churches. Preceded bv the 4th Regimental Band, under Lieutenant S. S. George, the High School Cadets, 500 strong, marched along Princes and George streets to attend service at Knox Church, where the Rev. R. E. Davics preached an appropriate sermon. The school officers—Lieutenant A. K. Anderson (O.C. the battalion), and Lieutenants Thomson. D. C. Anderson, Holmes, and Drees—were in charge. Mr Balfour took for The text of his address " Quit ye like men " (I Cor., xvi, 13). He spoke on true manhood—gcntlemanliness. —and illustrated his sermon from the life of Abraham Lincoln. It was well, as far as possible, to have a strong bodv. and the intellect should bo cultivated; 'but strength of character was the central thing. The strong man was governed bv principle. Lincoln once said : " All through life be sure you put your feet in the right place, and then stand firm." A true man was pure-minded, temperate, clean-lipped, and chivalrous towards women. A true gentleman had a heart as well as muscle and brain. Lincoln had a great, tender heart. And God had to bo acknowledged as having-a purpose for us. Wo must pray to Him for grace and guidance. Again and again we came across this acknowledgment. To a clergyman Lincoln had once remarked : " I know that the Lord is always on the side of the right; But it is rav constant anxiety and prayer that I and 'this nation should bo on tho Lord's side.'' At another time be had said: " If it were not for my belief in an overruling Providence it would be difficult for me. In the midst of such complications, to keep my reason on its seat. But I am confident that the Almighty has His plans, and will work them out, and, whether we see it or not, they will be the wisest and best forms I have always taken counsel of Him, and referred to Him my plans, and ' have never adopted a course of proceeding without being assured, as far as I could 00. of His approbation." Tho service closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
