LAND AND WATER.

Football is the now pastime of the Midland munition girls. It is not the Handling Code, as one might have expected, but Association. Quite a number of works teams have been formed in Coventry, and some of the girls show speed, and judgment in their play. CRICKET. FIRST GRADE. The match Grange v. High School, played on the North Ground, resulted in a win for Grange. Tho Grange scored 178 to the 108 of the School. The match Albion v. Carisbrook, which resulted in a draw, was played at Carisbrook under ideal conditions. Albion, batting first, declared their innings closed at 10 minutes to 5 with eight wickets down, for 161. Carisbrook had lost nine wicketa for 99 runs when time was called. THIRD GRADE. The Overseas Club defeated High School B in a two-innings match. Tha scores were: Overseas Club, 107 for nine wickets, and 53 for two wickets. High School made 46 and 85. For the Overseas Club, 'Norman (32 and 8), and Ingram (32), Clarke (24 and 18), and) Rennie (18) were, the best scorers. For High School, Malloch (32), and Kennedy (13) batted well. Clarke (seven for 36), Ingram (six for 18), arid Vivian (six for 25) bowled well for Overseas. LEAGUE CRICKET. Tramway 93 (Jepson 17, Morrow 15, Smith 14, S. Hay den 14, and Graham 13) defeated Standard, 44 (Richmond 9 not OTit). Bowling for Tramway, Graham took .four wickets for 16 runs, and Jepson four for 18, and for Standard, Ingram took five for 39, and Richmond three for 53. Railway 67 (Williams 18, Duckworth 17, King 12) beat Y.M.C.A. 31 and 46 for two wickets (Beadle 19, Thomas 16 not out). Bowling for Railway, Duckworth secured two wickets for six runs, Kiernan one for nine and two for' 20, and Aitken one for seven. For Y.M.C.A., Beadle took five for five, Dunn four for 11, and Thomas one for nine. ATHLETIC UNION. At a meeting of the Ofcago Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union affiliation was granted to the following clubs : —Port Molyneux, Kelso, Mount Ida, and Luggate. It was decided to notify all societies under the jurisdiction of the centre that should the total expenses of any meeting exceed 25 per cent, of the total proceeds, it would bo necessary for the society concerned to comply with the new regulations governing the amusement tax. The meeting also decided to forward a congratulatory message to Lance-corporal A. K. Campbell—a life member of the Port Molyneux Caledonian Society—who recently won the Military Medal in France. CORE RIFLE CLUB OPENING. In our illustrated pages will be found some photographs of the opening of the 1917-18 season by the Goro Rifio Club. Several of the veterans of former days were present, including one of 70 summers, and others of closo on 30 years' experience. Among the visitors were Rifleman T. W. M'Gowan and H. Walton (Mataura) ._ The mantle of the latter has fallen on his son, who ran his father closo in his score. The

son (Mr S. Walton) yesterday proved himself an energetic secretary. Prior to the commencement of a match of 10 shots each at 200yds range, Rifleman J. McCartney (who will be remejwVored as a Portobello rifle shot) in the absence of the president, briefly extended a welcomo to all present, declared the season opened, and fired the first shot. The match fired was a sweepstake, and the three prize-winners— Riflemen Fletcher, Tinnock, and Diiggan—handed in their prize-money to augment the Trophy Fund of the club.' Before dispersing, President Shanks (who arrived later) thanked the visitors and older members for turning out and taking an interest" in the ' club. Rifleman Walton (Mataura), Lieutenant-colonel Boyno and Rifleman 0. Kelly also spoke. ACCLIMATSSATIGN SOCIETY. The weekly meeting of the council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society dealt with the following questions: The Game Committee recommended that the season for grey duck, spoonbill duck, teal (except black teal), and black swan be two months—from May 1 to June 30; that it be an open season for paradise duck for one month—from May 1 to May 31,—the number of birds shot in any one day to be limited to 20; that the limit of total native game to be shot in any one day be 25, excepting black swan, the shooting of which be not limited in any way; that it be an open season for Californian quail from June 1 to July 31, the limit of quail that may be shot in one day to be 30 birds, shooting to be allowpd only within the areas specified in the Gazette notice; that it be an open season for mallard duck" for- two months—from May 1 to Juno 30,—the limit for these birds to be 12 per day: that a permit bo issued to Mr James Conn to cull deer within the restricted area where culling is allowed. Mr P. Hay, Tapanui, had written in re fallow deer for the Nelson Society, stating that the price for fallow deer would be £5 per head on truck. The committee recommended that Mr J. Crawford Anderson bo advised that. the question of the acclimatisation of opossums in the new district was being kept in view, and would be dealt with when an opportune time arrived ; that the Pomahaka deer country be subdivided into seven blocks, and that two licenses be iseued for each block, with a right to take two heads per license (price £4 per license); that application be made to the Minister for permission to take opossums as requested by Dr Truby King.—lt was decided that the number of deer heads that could be taken per license be increased to three, and with this amendment the report was adopted. With regard to deer nhooting, it was subsequently decided that the ballot be conducted' as follows : —Draw for licenses; 14 days to be allowed shooters to pair; draw for blocks; applications to close on January 1; ballot after the Christmas holidays. l The Angling Committee recommended, in connection with a request from Mr Steven regarding the dwelling and hatcheries, tha't tho president, Messrs C. A. Wilson, R. Rutherford, and A. S .Jenkins visit the hatcheries and report. That the action of the president in re prosecuting Messrs M'Rao and Johnston, be confirmed, and tha't the papers in the case be handed over to Mr Stout (InvercargilJ). Mr Russell being unable to act for' the society. The committee reported having received a letter from the secretary of tho Marino Denartmont enclosing a copy of an Order-in-Couneil providing 'thnt any acclimatisation society may, with the approval of the Minister of Marino, prohibit the use of torches for eel fishing in any river within its district. The committee recommended that information asked for by 'the Auckland Society regarding the Government measure as to licenses for quinnat salmon be supplied. The secretary of the Geelong Fish Acclimatisation Society had written advising that of the 40.000 rainbow trout sent 30.000 had arrived in good condition, but of the 50.000 brown trout ova ordered only 15,000 had been saved. The committee recommended that a rebate on half tho eggs lost bo made—namely, 22,500. The committee further recommended, as 'to the accumulation of weeds in the Tomahawk Lagoon, that the ranger see if tho property-owner would consent to the outlet bomg raised, which, it, was suggested, might remedy matters. —Adopted.

Mr D. Cooke wrote informing the council that ho had been served with notice- of appeal to the Court of Appeal by the Southland_ Society against the decision of Mr Justice Sim in the case of the Otago Society against the Southland Society.—lt was left to tho president to secure counsel in Wei. lington to represent the Otago Society.
