A girl 13 yeare of age, employed in Dunedin as a nursegirl, stole£s 2s in cash and a piano cover and a string of beads from her employer, and spent the money on*buying a "perambulator and other articles for her little sister, and, with the exception of a few lollies, spent nothing on herself. Two clergymen undertook to look after the girl, and restitution will be made. In reference to the suggested treating of red deerskins. Mr F. Greenslado, a Nelson tanner in a large way of business, suggests that a better plim would be to treat goatskins, thousands of which are procurable. This will make far more useful leather than deerskins. At the annual meeting of the Ooro Chamber of Commerce Mr Taylor, the retiringpresident, suggested that something might he done to encourage the of the wealth of the Waikaia district. Shale works were being started at Freshford. the shale being of a superior oil-bearing quality. The district also had great deposits of pineclay, from which aluminium was extracted, and of vegetable paints, which high analysis. Mr John Turnbnll was elected president for the year. Considerable exception was taken at the meeting of the Waikouaiti Council to the criticisms passed in the press and by somo members of the Otago Expansion League on the action of the council in repairing theMain North road, especially as regards the cutting down of trees and scrub which overshadows parts of the road, and tend to it damn or obstruct the view. The chairman (Mr Kilpatrick) remarked that if the Expansion Lea cue dealt with other bodies as it dealt with the council it would soon be known aa " the Otago Irritation League."
