DOMINION STOCKING LEAGUE.

An exposition of the work performed by helpers of the Dominion Stocking Lcag-ue was given on Tuesday, the 25th lilt., at the Bnptist Hall, Hanover street, under the auspices of the league. The hall was pleasingly set out with well-equipped stalls, furnished with articles of clothing made with the object of alleviating the sufferings of London's poor. The urtiolcs mainly consisted of knitted work in the way of stockings, socks, and underwear garments of a very serviceable order.' Numerous packages of such clothing were received from Auckland and Wellington, and parts of the South Island. The main object for holding the exhibition was to encourage additional membership for the league, so as to extend its usefulness. The nail was also provided with an artistically arranged tea room, together with flower and sweet stalls, all of which throughout the afternoon and evening recorded excellent business. The stalls were in charge of Mesciames M'Crindle, Austin, Calder, and Miss Kelly (tearoom), Mrs Purely and Miss Boyd (sweets), and Misses Bardsley and Calder (flower stall). The function was opened by the Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark), who, in a brief speech, eulogised the work of the league, and mentioned that he had been deputed by the High Commissioner for New Zealand to extend his (the High Commissioner's) thanks and appreciation for the assiduous manner in which the league as a whole had worked for the comfort of England's poor. —(Applause.) A short address was also given by Miss Beckingsale, of the Baptist Missionary Society, who is enjoying a brief respite from her arduous duties in India. Miss Beckingsale gave interesting details concerning the work of the mission in India, making mention of the fact that the" garments forwarded by the league to India for charitable purposes were more than welcomo, and assisted in no small way to inspire recipients to better ideals of living. Mrs M'Laren (president of tho league) wishes it to be made known that she is prepared to receive applications for membership at 604 Cumberland street.
