Corporal H. L. Smith, of the Otago Infantry Regiment, sent to his parents a small blne-and-yellow flag, which was the first flac hoisted at the Battle of Messines to indicate that the 10th Nortk Otago Company, First Battalion, of which he ia a member, had; reached their objective in that memorable battle.
