EXCESSIVE CRIMING

DECREASE IN PROSECUTIONS. WELLINGTON, September 20. Interesting statistics relating to offences for drunkenness are supplied by the Hon. A. L. Herdman (Attorney-general). They show that the prosecutions for drunkenness in the principal cities since the anti-shout-ing regulations came into force as compared with the previous year arc:—

Totals ... 9509 12,488 2979 In another return it is shown that the prosecutions for broaches of tho anti-shout-ing regulations up to August 31 were 635, including:—Auckland, 160; Wellington, 89; Christchurch, 53; Dunedin, 27. The number of bartenders convicted was 43, including:—Auckland, 15; Wellington, 8; Christchurch, 1; Dunedin, 1.
