ANOMALIES OF THE BALLOT
Leonard Harold James Fraser, Corner Bush, volunteered about three weeks ago, and was rejected by the Medical Board. James Cockerill. storeman, Lees street, volunteered twice for active service, and was rejected each time. Leonard Gordon Clark Kyle, of the staff of the Commercial Bank of Australia, Dunedin, whose name appears in the ballot, left New Zealand during February. 1916, to join the Commonwealth of Australia forces, and six weeks ago was with his regiment in France. E. F. Atkinson enlisted in July, and went into camp with the Thirty-third Reinforcement?.
Christopher L'Estrango enlisted as soon as he was of military, age. Francis Douglas Mangan, grocer's assistant, 27 Serpentine avenue, Dunedin, volunteered about two months ago, but was rejected. James A. M'Tver has produced evidence of his having enlisted. Fred John Dawson, Fnrkside Hotel, volunteered six weeks ago, but was rejected. Captain D. G. G. Hunter, command paymaster, Otago military district, volunteered for service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in August, 1914, but was not accepted, owing to the fact that h:s services wore required by the Defence Department in New Zealand. On several occasions since Captain Hunter applied for permission to proceed to the front, bur -this was withheld. George Washington Brown, plumber, of Victoria street, has twice volunteered and "been rejected. Mr J. A. M'Cartney served for two years in the Imperial Army, and arrived in the dominion a few months before war broke ■out. Ho volunteered, and went into camp at Trentham as a member of the Third Reinforcements, but shortly after was discharged as medically mint Later on he -volunteered for home service, but was again rejected.
