RIOT IN WELLINGTON.
WELLINGTON, August 13. As a sequel to a riot in the- centre of tho city on Saturday night eight men appeared in the Magistrate's Court to-day. It was *tated that the- trouble arose ovsr tho arrest «>f a fireman, who refused to leavo licensed premises. Tho police were interfered with by tho mates of the man, and later a big Crowd joined in tho disturbance, which
lasted about two hours. Some 20 police eventually appeared, and mounted constables cleared the crowd. Harvey Nicholls, tho man who was the main cause of tho disturbance, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, in addition to fine 3. Sydney Reid, who was charged with obstructing a constable whilo in tho execution of duty, was fined £5, and John Jones, similarly charged, was fined £lO. Henry
Jensen and Ernest Leslie, charged with inciting a man to resist. arrest, were fined £5 each. Terence Bowler, a soldier, was fined £5 for using obsceno language, and on a chargn of inciting Nicholls to resist was convicted and ordered to be handed over to the military authorities.
