OTAGO APPLES.
(By Cable).
A small shipment of Obaigo apples arrived Ipr exhibition at the Horticultural Show in London, in excellent condition, though a few were “pitted.” Mr F. G. Duncan, the grower, has presented ins Majesty the King and Queen Alexandra with samples of the different varieties. Messrs A. Moritzson and Co.,_ through whom the shipment was forwarded, inform us that they have learnt that only some eight apples of the Cleopatra variety showed slight signs of pit. This could not bo detected before shipment, as the Cleopatra were shipped when partly green ensure the fruit arriving in good condition in London. As Mr F. G. Duncan’s orchard at Sunnyvale, where the apples wore grown, is a young one, bitter pit is easily accounted for. The result of the shipment, at anyrate, confirms the conclusions suggested by prior shipments, that, if carefully handled, Otago apples will carry well to London. The cases for presentation to the King and to Queen Alexandra comprised one case of Cleopatra, three cases of Jonathans, two cases of Stunners, and two cases of Stamen Winesaps. Two cases —one of Jonathan and one of Cleopatra —were for the Royal Horticultural 'Society’s Show, and, after exhibition, one was to be presented to the Prime Minister and the other to the Sigh Commissioner.
