ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

A married woman named Stagg mad* an unsuccessful attempt to drown herself at Bluff on Wednesday evening (states tli<jj Southland Daily Times). The circumstance* are that the woman, the wifo of Charle* (Stagg, late of Wyndham, who was apparently the worse for liquor, went into * local fish shop just before 6 o'clock and asked for a pencil and paper to write 4 note. She wrote a few words and asked th* assistant to take it to her daughter. FoiS tunately he met Constable Wroblenski, whs? was on duty at tho time, and the constable opened the note, which read as follows:—* "Dear Mrs I am going. Havo no re* grots. M. Stagg." The constable ascertained that tho woman had gone toward? the station and, following through the station vara, the constable's attention waa suddenly arrested by shrieks from the direction of the wharf. Tho constable divested himself of his helmet and overcoat, and,seeing the woman in tho water, jumped fa. As it was low water at the time, he found no difficulty in getting the woman ashore. Sergeant Brooke arrived on tho scene, when the woman was quickly conveyed to the Sailors' Rest, where, under the, supervision of Dr Torrance, she was resuscitated. Mr Taylor, of tho National Mortgage, who was on the wharf at the timo, noticed tho woman jump over the rail of tho approach leading to tho wharf. There wa3 less than 4ft of water at the spot. Something has apparently been preying on toe mind of Mrs Stagg. who up to tho present; has been a law-abiding citizen.
