EDENDALE SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL.

-_— —-o UNVEILED BY SIR JAMES ALLEN. The ceremony of unveiling the monument erected by public subscription in the Coronation Park, Edendale, took place on Tuesday, 3rd iust., in the presence of a large gathering of residents of tho Eastern district. The monument, which is of a height of 30ft, is composed of concrete, and stands on a square base of 17ft. Steps lead to the central block, to which are affixed two marble tablets, on which tho names of tho district's soldiers are inscribed; and this is flanked by two supporting blocks on which are two lions couchant. On tho top of tho column is tho life-size figure of a Now Zealand infantryman standing at attention. Two marble tablets are affixed to tho rear side of the monument ready for the inscription of further names—fully a dozen of which are already available, together with those of Nurses Scott and Rodger. No name is to be engraved (says the Farmer) until the soldier leaves the country • but those of both volunteers and balloted men will then be inscribed, in similar style to those already recorded, in gold lettering on the white surface. A neat concrete fence, with iron railing, has also been erected in front. The contractors for the work were Messrs J. Eraser and Co., monumental masons.
