CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Clutha County Council met on Thursday. On tho motion of Cr Maginness it was decided to call for tenders for the carting of 2000 yards of metal from the Owaka railway station to the township. The following tender was accepted:— Carting and spreading 500 tons of Logan's Point metal from the Otanomomo railway siding to the settlement road, Thomas Marshall (4s 6d per ton). The following motion by Cr .Maginness was agreed to: —" That it be left in the hands of the engineer and the mover to have maintenanco metal from the Katea quarry crushed as cheaply as possible." The settlers had agreed to cart up to 1000 yards free of charge. engineer's report. The report of the engineer detailed work necessary on the bridge at the Waikoikoi township ,a bridge near Wairuna through which a traction engine went, another on •Ferguson's road similarly damaged, and the bridge on Sandy Creek (Tuapeka Mouth). A small bridgo was required near Mr Spittle's property, Waikoikoi. He also recommended the council to apply to the South Otago Freezing Company for a small piece of land at tho intersection, of the Port Molyneux-Balclutha and Riverside roads to improve the dangerous angle. He reported that 99 motor car and 18 motor cycle licenses had been taken out since the by-laws came . into force.—The report was adopted. A committee consisting of tho chairman (Cr J. EdwardsJ ■no Crs North. Beggr, Camming, and Nicol was set up in connection with the BalcluthaPort Molyneux road, where work had had to be stopped owing to Hooding. It was resolved also to approach the Freezing Company as suggested. ' CORRESPONDENCE. The Minister of Public Works notified that ho was prepared to make a grant of £240 for repairs to tho Tahakopa bridge on stated conditions. —Received. # The Minister also notified that ' county councils had power to. make regulations for the prevention of heavy traffic on bridges. —Received. Four residents of Warepa wrote drawing attention to the state of the bridge at the bottom of Sandford's road. —It was decided to repair the structure. The Welfare Society, Kaka Point, wrote offering £5 towards the purchase of a piece of land for the purpose of widening the road opposite the dwelling of Mr David Wood. —The council agreed to the purchase and payment of balance (£2 10s). In response to a request from a number of farmers at Ratanui, it was decided to spend. £6O on metalling the road between tho school and a spot indicated. A letter from Mr Arthur Ombler (Puketiro) was referred to tho Minister of PublicWorks with a request for a grant. Mr Omb'.er's desire was to have a track formed so that school children would not have to incur the danger of walking along a portion of the railway line. The Clerk of the Taieri County Council wrote asking the council's support of its protest against tho setting up < of a commission at the present time_ to inquire into and report on the apportionment of the cost of maintaining the Main South road in the Borough of Green Island.—Cr Begg said he thought the council should concur with the views of the Taieri County Council, and he would move —"That tho chairman (Cr Edwards) be appointed a delegate to attend the sitting of the commission to give evidence, and to urge that the Clutha County should not be made to contribute." —The motion was carried, and it was also resolved to adopt the Taieri County Council' resolution.
