PALMERSTON NOTES.
On "Wednesday afternoon an open-air fete was held on the Show Ground in aid of the Soldiers' Parcel Fund. A fair number of people attended, but perhaps not so many as might have been expected in such a good cause. A hockey match was played in the show ring between the Palmerston Ladies' Hockey Club and a scratch team of men who were dressed in skirts and blouses of various colours. The game, which was evenly contested throughout, ended in a draw, each side scoring five goals. A motor driving competition followed, the cars having to be driven between kerosene tins placed at intervals round tho_ ring. This was won by the only lady driver present, who negotiated all the obstacles in good style. Good business was done at the stalls, where flowers,' produce of all kinds, and lollies were in profusion. The tea rooms and "Hoopla" also did well. Over £4O was taken during the afternoon, which will be augmented by two-thirds of the proceeds of a picture show given in aid of the fund by the Allies Picture Company. Spring has now fairly set in. During the last week of warm weather the willows have come almost into full leaf, and the whole countryside looks green. Mr Grimsdale, who lost one eye through a pellet from a shot gun, has returned to work, not looking much the worse for thn operation.
