OTAGO MEDICAL SCHOOL.
GOVERNMENT GRANT ASKED FOR. Shortly after his arrival in Dnnedin on the 18th the Hon. J. A. Hannn (Minister of Education) was waited on by a deputation from the Council of the Otajro University with the object of ascertaining if the Government would be prepared to make a grant of money to enable the council to meet an unforeseen additional expenditure of £3550 required in connection with the now block for the Otago Medical School and for adequate equipment. The Minister said he had been going into the question of the finances of the universities. He was as anxious as they were that the institution which stood to the credit of the dominion as a national school should be placed in a good financial position. Since 1914 the following payments had been made by the Government to the University of Otago:—Medical School building, etc.. £12,000; Home Science Hostel, £1450; balance of subsidy on Mr Oliver's gift of £2uuu, £445; balance of reduction of debenture debt, £1000; subsidy Qn priyato contributions to the new Medical bchool, £2590 12s lOd. He assured them that a subsidy of £ for £ on the £BOOO subscribed by the public would be paid by the Government, and mentioned that recently he had approved of the payment of £2590 in this direction. While he could not promise them a grant of £3550, he was impressed with their strong representations, and would have pleasure in placing their request and arguments before Cabinet. In conclusion,.
