RUGBY. FIRST GRADE. University B v. Southern. The following wore the results of the Senior matches played on Saturday: Universfty 15 points. Southern Nil. Mr Facer made a judicious referee. Union v. Alhambra. Union 16 points. Alhambra. 8 points. Mr Thomson was referee. University C v. Port Chalmers. University C 11 points. Port Chalmers Nil. Mr E. Clanoey was referee. THIRD GRADE. Zingari-Richmond won from Union by default. Taiori Rovers defeated Southern at Mosgiel by 6 points to 3. FOURTH GRADE. Alhfmbra defeated Port Chalmers by 7 points to 3. FIFTH GRADE. Zingari-Richmond (23 points) defeated Alhambra A (3 points/. HIGH SCHOOLS' TOURNAMENT. The High iSchoola' tournament was continued on the Caiisbrook Ground on Wednesday, when the losing teams of Saturday met, and the winning teams of tho same day tried conclusions. The weather was fine, and the ground in excellent order. There was a good attendance of the public. Christchurch v. Southland. A fairly even game resulted in a win for Southland by 6 points (a goal from a free kick and a try) to 4 points (a potted goal). Southland High School .. 6 points Christchurch High School 4 points Timaru v Otago. Tho winning teams of Saturday, Timaru and Otago, went to the field at 3.25 p.m., Otago playing with a slight wind in their favour while Timaru had to face a strong sun. The game resulted thus: Otago High School ... 12 points Timaru High School ... 11 points There was tense excitement towards the close of the game. Timaru made desperate efforts to score, and Otago strained every muscle to keep their lead. Tho supporters of the Otago High School carried the winning team off the ground shoulder-high. ENTERTAINED AT DINNER
The members of tho visiting teams and of the local team were entertained at dinner in the Art Gallery Hall at, half-past 6 by the Old Boys' Society. Mr A. A. Finch (president of the association) occupied the chair A number of toasts wore happily proposed and as happily responded to. the speeches being interspersed with musical items. At the close the boys sang " Auld Lang Syne" in a very lusty and hearty manner. PRIMARY SCHOOLS' MATCH. SOUTHLAND v. OTAGO. (Fhom Odb Own CoREEsroNDSNT.) INYERCARGILL. August 30. Tho annual primary schools' inccrprovincial Rugby match Otago v. Southland was played to-day under adverse weather conditions. Heavy rain fell overnight, and showers prevailed at intervals during tho afternoon. This made tho ball greasy, and difficult to handle. Playing_ in the first spell with a strong wind behind them, the visitors secured two tries, which were not converted. The scorers were Hawkins and M'Combe. In the second half Southland attacked strongly, after missing several chances during wild play, and gained a try and a goal from the field, winning by 7 points to 6. The Otago forwards played a very fine game in the second half. The match was played for the first time under conditions limiting tho participants to 9st weight or under.
