August 19.—Beautiful spring weather is now being 'experienced. Football. —The third match of the season between Queenstown and Arrow Territorials and Senior Cadets was played at Queenstown on Wednesday and resulted in a draw —each side sloping six points. Mr G. B. Burns acted as referee. Valedictory.—On Friday evening, 11th inst., Private George Salmond, who was down on final leave, was entertained at a social in the Town Hall, Queenstown, by his many friends in the district. There was a very large attendance. During the evening Private Salmond was presented with a wristlet watch and purse of sovereigns.—Miss May Cotter, who recently resigned the position of town clerk at Arrowtown, loft on Monday for Sydney, whore she will join the Nursing Sisters at the Lewisham Hospital. Prior to her departure from Arrowtown she was presented by the townspeople with a handsome manicure set, and from tho congregation of St. Patrick’s Church, of which she was secretary, she received a purse of sovereigns.—On Monday evening last Mrs J. L. Jopp, Arrowtown, invited her friends to a social in the Athenaeum Hall to say good-bye to her son, Lance-corporal James Jopp, who is going to the front with tho Seventeenth Reinforcements. There was a large attendance, and during the evening Mr G. H. Romans, on behalf of the guests, presented Lance-corporal Jopp with a wristlet watch. Going to the Front.—Messrs R. W. Geisow, J. M'Carthy, and F. Browning, who recently enlisted, have been called up. and will proceed to Trontham next week. Personal. —The Rev. R. G. Coates, who was recently appointed vicar of tho parish of Wakatipn, was, at the evening service at. St. Peter’s Church, Queenstown, on Sunday last, inducted into tho charge by the Yen. Archdeacon Woodthorpe, M.A. On Tuesday evening the Rev. and Miss Coates wero formally welcomed by the Queenstown parishioners at a social in the parish hall. — The Rev. Father Graham left Queenstown on Saturday last on a visit to his relatives in Sydney. Prior to his departure lie was presented by his parishioners with a purse of sovereigns.—Prior to their ■ departure from tho Head of tho Lake last week, Mr and Mrs MTlonry wore met by a number of friends, and Mrs M‘Henry was made the recipient of a purse of sovereigns. Soiree. —The annual soiree in connection with St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Queenstown, took place in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, 9th inst. The Rev. G. 11. Gibb, 8.A., -occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance. Addresses were given by the Revs. G. H. Gibb and ]). K. Fisher (Lumsden), and Messrs 0. A. Kennedy and Taylor, homo missionaries at Arrowtown and Athol respectively. The choir contributed several anthems, and song were given by Miss Johnston Rev. Mr Gibb, Mr Ballantyne. and Captain L. Robert -on ; a duct by Misses K. Murchison and A. Anderson; a recitation by Miss Hilliker: pianoforte, due by Misses May and Lily M’Galium. Miss May Anderson gave an exhibition of Indian club swinging, while t.h<> Rev. Mr G lib arid Mr A. J. Thompson, LLB.. gave tho filial-.-spearean dialogue ; Quarrel Scene from “Julius fle.sar.” A plentiful supply of refreshments was provided by the ladies of tho congregation.
