THE PYRAMUS.

BACK IN PERSIAN GULF. AUCKLAND, June 29. An account of the recent doings of the ship's company of H.M.S. Pyramus is supplied by a member of the crew in a letter to his mother. The communication, which is dated May 7, says: "We are back again on our old station in the Persian Gulf, and are just settling down to business again. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves while we were at Bombay. Our club gave four dances, and the ladies gave two in return. They told us that there was no ship in Bombay which had ever apt on bo well with everybody. It is so different in India. There is no white working class, of course; all the whites hold high positions and draw large salaries, and are, generally speaking, a good few degrees higher than an ordinary A,.8. in the navy. At our dance we were mixing with majors and colonels and high officials in the civil service, and with their wives, daughters, and relatives. Of course, having an earl for a captain made a diffe ence. Everybody wanted to know him, but they liked his men as well. The most surprising thing was that there was very little drunkenness among- us, w-hich was very funny, seeing we had spent 10 months in one of the thirstiest places in the world. All hands looked after themselves and after the ship's name, and but for a few cases where other ships' companies made trouble everything was lovely, and the captain is awfully pleased. We are back in the old station. Summer is coming on, too, and those blessed Tangistanes always like scrapping in hot weather, because they know it does not suit us. Y» T e ought to have some fun and sport soon —about time, too."
