SURPRISE ISLAND WRECK

SYDNEY, June 28. Eleven of the crew of the barque Manunius have arrived by the French mail steamer. Captain Robertson states that his barque was wrecked on May 26 near Petotes Reef, Surprise Island. After discharging coal at Noumea, she -was proceeding to Surprise Island to load guano for Auckland. A strong current set the vessel on to the reef, the mainmast fell, and the vessel turned on her beam ends and became a hopeless wreck. The crew stood by until daylight, when they were forced to abandon the vesfee!. They were rescued by the manager of the island. Next day the vessel began to break up. The crew spent 10 days on Surprise Island, and then chartered a cutter and proceeded to New Caledonia, and thence from Noumea.
