WAIKAIA.
•Juno 26.—The weather for the past three weeks has been very mild—sunny days, like spring-. Last week heavy rain set. in on Monday and Tuesday, followed by thick fogs. On' Friday the sun L shone brightly, and also on Saturday 'and' Sunday. _ A social and dance, held in the 'Coronation Hall on Friday evening, 23rd iu'-t-, was largely attended. The proceeds are for the dependents of the bravo and noble men who lost their lives in the navy in the Nortn Sea battle. Mr W. Christie (chairman) spoke in reference to the mighty navy which. guards our Empire. Solos were given bv Misses Smaill (Riversdale) and M'lvor (Waikaia), and Mrs Clark. Messrs Clark, S. M'lvor, and Master B. Clark. The musicians wore Mr and Mrs Clark and Mr H. Debaurie (piano), Mr Currie (violin), Messrs Sapor "and D. Sanson (accordion), and Messrs Cochrane and J. Christie (bagpipes). The bagpipe music was- also played outside the hall before the social commenced. During' an interval in the programme Mr Milne, in a patriotic speech, referred to our Motherland, her noble and mighty navy, and the late great general. Lord Kitchener. Mr Milne then presented Messrs Charles Hurley, Stanley M'lvor, and William Collins (oh behv-lf of his brother, C. Collins, who was unable to be present), who shortly leave for Trentham, and Edward 'Williams, wounded at Gallipoli, and now residing at Waikaia, each with a fountain pen and safety razor as tokens of esteem from the residents of Waikaia- and district. The recipients suitably responded. The social concluded at 2 a.m. The sum of £l2 was collected. Personal. —The engagement is announced of Miss Pinckney, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Pinckney, denary Station, to Mr Baker, of England, at present cadet at denary Station. Obituary. —I regret to record the death on the 4th hist, of one of the oldest, resi dents of Waikaia and district, Mrs Janies Haidmsn, ' who passed away after about three weeks' illness. Her husband predeceased hor about Beven years ago. Mrs Hardman -was born in Edinburgh, came to Now Zealand when 16 years of a«e, and resided about 50 years in Waikaia and district. .She leaves two daughters, three sons, and 13 grandchildren, also a wide circle of friends to mourn their loss The funeral on the 7th inst. was attended by _a large number of old friends. Father Buckley officiated at the grave.
