There passed peacefully away on the 9th inst., at Riverton, another one of New Zealand's old pioneers in the person of Mr James Smith, at the advanced age of 79 years. The late Mr Smith was horn at Rcsehearty, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, on the 21st September, 1836. He came to Victoria as a lad of 19 years, and followed goldmining at Bcndigo for a number of years. Thence ho came In New Zealand in the early eighties and settled as a gold miner on the Wesi ''oast. Subsquently lie resided at Nevis and in the T .a';o district about Queenstown. and finally at Ida Bank, Southland, until nine years aero when he retired and went to reside in Riverton. T?y his kindly nature he made many friend.* in ~i| parts, and none but those who have benefited will ever know of (he generosity which he bestowed from time to time. He rh'orl as he lived—a peaceful man.
