Much comment has been mode on the wonderful reserves of the French army, and the brilliant manner in which they have been handled by their generals. A battalion is here seen passing to the position assigned to them in the Vosges, where they will remain in readiness for any emergency.
Typical of the general condition of quiet heroism is the behaviour of the road-menders on the lines of communication into Verdun. They lie flat in sheltered corners, and watch the German shells. As each missile falls they rush out and set to work mending the road, and in a short space of time the damaged thoroughfare is repaired, and the soldier roadmender is back in his shelter again, where he occasionally rolls himself a cigarette to vary the monotony.
The sights "to be seen on both the main and by-roads which converge on the Verdun sector have been the subject of much admiring comment by onlookers who have been priviliged to view them. Convoys of interminable length constantly pass, and the troops are cheerful and full of enthusiasm for the great cnu?e of the Allies.
Such has been the terrific nature of the bombardment on the environs of Verdun that to-day not n building stands Intact in the region of tins epoc-making battle. All is devastation and ruin, and the whole countryside is now typical of the scene depicted above. Xewspaper niustrations.)
