LAKE COUNTY.

June 3. —At the beginning of the week cold, showery weather was experienced, and a good deal of snow fell on the high country. The weather has now cleared, and hard frost has set in. Wedding.—A quiet wedding was celebrated at the residence of the bride’s mother, Gibbston, on the 17fch ulfc., the contracting parties being Miss Ivy Chard, youngest daughter of Mrs Chard, and Mr Frederick Smith, of Patea, Taranaki. The bridesmaids were Misses L. Gordon, _A, Haines (cousin of bride), and E. Bell (niece of bride), and Mr J. Ward (Riverton) acted as best man. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. G. H. Gibb (Queenstown). The newly-wedded couple left the same afternoon for Queenstown, en route for their future home in Taranaki. Death. —Another old resident of the Arrow district, in the person of Mr James Whelan, passed away at the residence of his brother-in-law (Mr E. Fitzgibbon), Arrow Junction, on Slunday last. Deceased, who was 83 years of age, was a native of Queen’s County, Ireland, and was for some years a member of the Irish Constabulary. He came out to Australia in 1859, and was attached to the Victorian police for about three years. In 1862 lie arrived in New Zealand and took up police duties, being appointed to Arrowtown in 1863, and he was afterwards stationed at Cardrona. He resigned from the force in 1865, and after giving the West Coast diggings a trial, he returned to the district, and took up land at Arrow Junction, where he resided for upwards of a quarter of a century. He then removed to Gibbston, where he resided until about two years ago, when he removed to Arrowtown. The late Mr Whelan was a man of strict integrity, and enjoyed the' confidence and respect of a wido circle of friends. He leaves a widow to mourn her loss. The funeral took place at Arrowtown on Tuesday, the burial service being conducted by the Rev. Father O’Donnell. Personal. —Mr John Forbes, of Arrowtown, who had been accepted for service, and left about three weeks ago to join the tunnelling corps at Auckland, returned home lost week. He had the bad luck to get a slight hemorrhage of the lungs on the . journey from, Wellington to Auckland, and on his arrival at camp 'was rejected by the Medical Board. —Mr D. Cosgrove, of Arrowtown, has been accepted for service at the front, and is awaiting instructions to proceed to camp.—Mr J. J. Mcßride has been appointed agent for the Public Trustee at Queenstown. —News was received this week of the death in Egypt, from enteric, of Private John Horne, son of Mr and Mrs W. Horne, former residents of Arrowtown. Assessment Court. —A sitting of the Assessment Court was held at Arrowtown on the 26th ult., to hear- objections to the revaluations of the Arrow, Matukituki, _ Greenstone,- Cardrona, and Shotover Ridings of Lake County. The Bench was occupied by Mr H. A. Young, S.M. (president) and Messrs W. Menzies (Invercargill), and D. Macleod (Arrowtown), assessors. Eleven objections wefe lodged, but only two_ objectors appeared to support their objections. Mr T. L. Oswin, officer-in-charge at Inver- - cargill, represented the Valuation Department, and Mr A. M. Brodriok (Cromwell) appeared for the objectors. The first objection dealt with that of J. Cowie ; Nichols (for Mrs Helen H. Nichols), who objected to the valuation of Mount Pisa run. _ Evidence in support of the objection was given by J. Cowie-Nichols, G. T. Paterson (manager of Mount Pisa station), and John Faulks (Makarora), and in support of the valuation by J. J. Mcßride, valuer. The valuation was- sustained. —James Logan objected to valuation of his run at Makarora, but after hearing the evidence of the objector and the valuer, the valuation, as amended, was sustained. Wakatipu Lioensin g Committee. —The annual meeting of the committee was held at Queenstown on Thursday last. Present — Messrs H. A. Young, S.M. (chairman). Ford, Jeffrey, Johnston, Macleod, and McMullan. The .Southland Health Inspector reported on the condition of the' various hotels in the southern end of the district and those in Queenstown and Arrowtown. Extensive repairs and improvements in all cases were recommended hy the inspector. The committee considered that somo of these were not necessary at the present time, and licenses were granted conditional on several improvements being carried out. _ The police objected to the granting- of a license to R. Cameron for the Lake Wakatinn Hotel, Kingston. Mr Cook, Dunedin, * appeared for applicant. _ After hearing evidence, the committee decided to grant the license. An objection was also entered against the granting of the license for Lindis Pass Hotel, as certain improvements, ordered last year, had not been carried out, but, on consideration, it was decided to grant the license, on condition that improvements be made to buildings. Tire licenses in other parts of the district were granted The renewal of licenses -of Macetown Hotel and Victoria Bridge Hotel was not applied for, and these will lapse at the end of June.
