AN INTERESTING COMPETITION

TURNIPS AND SCONES. The result of an interesting competition in the production of turnips and the cooking of scones is just now on view in one of the windows of Messrs Arthur Barnett, Ltd., in George street, where it is attracting no little attention. The display is certainly a most meritorious one, and it, has been set out in tho window with much taste and skill. The competition for the best oven and girdle scones and the best turnips has been organised by Mr Burnett with such success that no fewer than 130 exhibits have boon received from all parts of the province. Substantial prize money amounting to 18 guineas in all and including two firs* 'prizes of five guineas was offered. The entry money and the money received from the subsequent sale of the turnips is to be devoted to tho Otago Wounted Soldiers' Fund. Cookery competitors had to enter five oven scones and five girdle scones, and the judges —Mr and Mrs James Brown—had considerable difficulty in selecting the pme winners. Tho general standard they fount? to be cxcellent, and largo numbers of t:;o exhibits were deserving of very high commendation. Eventually the first place was awarded to Mrs A. Lane, of Omakau. The turnip cornpi brought in some exhibits of extraordinary size and weight, as may be s:en from the fact that the winning three entered by Mr T. Boyd (Stirling) totalled 911 b 13-ioz, while the second three, sent in by Miss R. Campbell (Balclutha). were only a few ounces short of this huge total. There were 30 entries in this competition, and some very fine mangels are also exhibited by Messrs Arnold Bros., of Omakau. After they have been shown the 2000 scones sent in are to be given to the Salvation Army for distribution in th r ir homes.
