SENSATIONAL CRIMES

MELBOURNE, May 31. A sensational attempt at robbery was made this forenoon. Two postal officials named Hughes and M'Cartney were conveying £2OOO with which to pay the workmen at the new Post Office buildings in Spencer street, when three men, armed with revolvers, mshed up in a motor car, threw popper in their faces, struck M'Cartney severe blows on the head, and attempted to grab the bag of money. Workmen, however, came upon the scene and prevented the robbery. The desperadoes then clambered into the motor and escaped. M'Cartney was conveyed to a hospital, but hia condition is not serious. Another sensation occurred at Abbotsford, where Mr Gorman, postmaster, drew £2OO from a bank with which to pay soldiers. Returning to the post office he deposited the money in n bag on the counter and left to attend to the telephone. A man entered, secured the bag, bolted, and wan not caught.
