MILITARY CROSSES AWARDED.
LONDON, May 30. Among the long list of deeds for which latest honours have been conferred nothing is more notable than the case of Second Lieutenant Campbell, of the Engineers. The Germans had dug a mine and primed it with over a ton of high explosives. It requircd only the lighting of the fuse, and apparently the Germans were awaiting the favourable moment for this. Lieutenant Campbell cut into the gallery and removed the entire charge. For this he received the Military Cross. Another fine story is that of Second Lieutenants Lord-Donne and Walker, who on an aeroplane sighted a Fokker 1000 ft below. They dived, Walker firing at a 60ft range. Lieutenant Lord-Donne headed straight for the Fokker, and both opened fire. The lieutenants shot away the Fokker’s wing, and it fell into the British lines. Both received Military Crosses.
