OBITUARY.
MR JAMES J. HILL. NEW YORK, May 29. The death is announced of Mr James J. Hill, the American railway king, at St. Paul, in the State of Minnesota. Mr James Jerome Hill was born near Guelph (Ontario), in September, 1838. He acted as agent for the North-western Packet Company in 1865, but later established a general fuel and transportation business on his own account. In 1870 ho established the Red River Transportation Company, which was the firet to open communication between St. Paul and Winnipeg. In 1878 ho organised a syndicate, which secure.fi control of the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad from Dutch owners, and reorganised the eystem as tho St. Paid, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railroad Company, and became its general manager. He interested hirnself in building tho Great Northern railway, with various branches and a direct steamship connection with China and Japan. Ho was promoter and director of a number of railway companies and banking organisations, and was vice-president of tho New York Chamber of Commerce. REV. CHARLES STEAD. SYDNEY, May 30.
