FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.
STATE SUBVENTION URGED. WELLINGTON, June 2. During bho discussion on the answers to questions to-day several members pleaded for a State subvention for friendly societies in order that their strapped finances should bo supported during the currency of tho wax. Tho point was emphasised that tho interests of members of societies were being conserved by tho different societies whilst members were at tho front. Tho societies were keeping going tho insurances and subscriptions of those members at tho front, which represented a heavy expenditure, and which was really being taken off tho State. Tho Minister in charge of friendly societies stated that the Government's intentions on the subject would be made known shortly. Referring to the matter later, Mr Massey said the matter of subventions for friendly societies was before tho Cabinet, and ho could say that so far as ho was concerned the matter would receive tho favourable consideration of tho Government.
