COURSING

DUNEDIN COURSING CLUB. MEMORIAL MEETINGFirst Day—Friday, Jxjnb 2. Some good sport was witnessed at Forbury Park yesterday afternoon, when the Dunedin Plumpton Coursing Club commenced a two days' meeting, a prominent feature of which was running oft' a stake, connected with which was the name of the late Mr Frank Everest. Two rounds of the Everest Memorial Stakes were run under exceedingly favourable weather conditions, and these were witnessed by a fairly numerous and very enthusiastic gathering of those interested in this particular branch ofeporfc. The Plumpton was in good order, and thfl hares in nearly ;ill cases proved strong runners, but they did not appear to be very familiar with the location of the escapes. The fact that they had not probably been too industriously driven is, however, largely attributable to' the fact that the recent rains have- rendered driving difficult, if nob impracticable. Mr 11. S. Irving, of Invercargill, acted as judge, and Mr J. Ronald had charge of the leash. Following are the results: — EVEREST MEMORIAL MAIDEN STAKE. In the tlvrd round of the Everest Memorial Stake Blue Moon ran unsighted and Tipperary led up; an undecided resulting. In the run-off Blue Moon, led by a couple of yards. Both worked well on the hare, but' Blue Moon had the score in hand a* the end of the course, when Tipperary killed. Full Hand led Sweet Pea by three vards, and maintained the advantage without great difficulty till the hare made ita escape. Carlyon ran a bye, and quickly killed his game. In the fourth round Blue Moon had slightly the advantage of Carlyon in the run up, and terminated the course, which was brief, with a kill. Full Hand a bye. Blue Moon and Full Hand being both owned by Mr J. Yf, P. Vickery, the stake was not further proceeded with, these two dogs dividing the stake so far as first and second place were concerned. In the first round of the Supplementary Maori Chief led Blue Bonnet by four yards, the course terminating in favour of Maori Chief with a kill. Mentor got to tho hare first in his bout with Field Marshal, the hare favouring him, and wound up with a kill. Speckled Band led Milo by quite 15 yards, but was outworked in what took place subsequently, though tho margin in his favour could not have been large. Garryowen had a slight lead of Best Thought in the run up, and killed in a short course. In the semi-final of the Supplementary Maori Chief beat Mentor in the lead up, and tho score remained in his favour when the hare was killed. Garryowen led Milo by fully half a dozen yards, and kept the advantage to the end of the- course. In the final Maori Chief led Garryowen to the game, and in a very long course gave tho latter few opportunities of scoring.
