TUAPEKA COUNTY COUNCIL.

Iho monthly meeting of tho Tnapeka County Council was held] last week, Cr Bennetts (chairman) presiding. Mrs H. Nctt, Roxburgh, applied for permission to erect a gate on road to Nobbies. —Cr H'Donald said he had seen all the people interested, _ and they were quite agreeable.—Permission was granted, subject provisions of the Land Act. The Secretary, Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, notified that the county's contribution for hospital and charitable aid for the current year was assessed at £1877 15s 3d.—Received. The Secretary, Otago Expansion League. wrote with regard to the poor condition of tho Beaumont-Roxburgh road, and offering to assist tho council in an endeavour to secure Government's assistance with a view to having it put in a proper state of repair. He asked to be supplied with an estimate of tho probable cost of effecting the necessary repairs, and what amount the council would bo able to contribute.—The sum of £2OCO would be required to put tho mam road from Big Hill to Roxburgh in thorough repair, and the council would contribute as liberally as funds would permit. Mr R, Murray, on behalf of the Havelock Commonage Trustees, applied for permission to erect gates on certain roads.—The application was deferred till next meeting. Mr W. M'Donald, Tapanui, was appointed ranger in the Tapanui, Crookston, and Beaumont Ridings, at a remuneration of £l2 10s per annum—£s each from Tapanui and Crookston, and £2 10s from Beaumont. Robert M'Kay (a returned trooper) was appointed for the Browns, Gabriels, VV.aitahuna, and Waipori Ridings, at a salary of £2O per annum. Mr Fred. Ellis was appointed poundkoepcr at Waitahuna. The Engineer reported that the roads throughout the country were very good. During tho month a traction engine broke through the bridge at Stevenson's Flat, making a complete wreck of the superstructure. It was about 15 to 18 years since the superstructure was put on. To get the engine out they had to cut down one of the abutments. The bridge was now open for traffic again. A lew bridge was urgently required at Featherstone (Crookston), and he recommended that the site be removed 40ft nearer Heriot. That would give a better let-away for the water, and would save the Loir's to a large extent during flood time. A bridge up Walker's road (Tapanui Riding) was urgently required, and a Government grant had been applied for. He had made application to the Distret Engineer feu- a transfer of the grant (£500) for the Edievalo-Moa Flat road to be spent on the existing road, and had just been advised to forward plans when ready for approval. _ Tenders had been accepted as follow :- Reserve road, Mr Charles Anderson; Harris road, Mr D. Crawford.—The report was adopted. It was resolved that the engineer proceed with the erection of the Featherstone bridge at once. Tho rate for the current year was fixed at Id in the pound. Accounts amounting to £1250 lis Sd were passed' for payment. The sum of £l5O was authorised to bo spent on metalling the Heriot road, opposite, tho church, tho expenditure to be divided between the Tapanui and Crookston Ridings. _ Cr M'Donald: drew attention to a necessity for lighting the Miller's Flat bridge, which on dark nights was like a tunnel, and was a source of danger to drivers of vehicles.—The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, engineer, end member to attend to.
