THE GERMAN MENACE.
A FLAT DENIAL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, May 18. By permission of the House today, the Hon. J. Allen read the following telegram from Captain Hotop, who was yesterday accused b- Mr Payne of being a German, with two brothers fighting for Germany: "John Payne's statement about myself is an infamous lie. My only brother died five years ago. I have no relatives fighting against the Allies." When the telegram was read Mr Payne ejaculated: "What is his nationality?" Mr Allen: In regard to certain questions given notice of to-day by the member for Grey Lynn, I ask the publio to suspend their judgment, and not be influenced by the suggestion that th > persons mentioned are of German nationality until they hear the full story. Mr Payne: That :s all we want. Mr Payne asked the Minister to-day whether Lieutenant Grierson had left New Zealand with the reinforcements. Mr Allen: Yes; he has left New Zealand as a British commissioned officer, and an honourable gentleman at that.
