WOMEN TO BE EMPLOYED. WELLINGTON, May 22 In order to fill vacancies in the post and Telegraph service, created by numerous enlistments thereform, the department is arranging for the employment of youths and young women. During the past fortnight applications were invited from young women between 18 and 21 years of age to undergo tuition in telegraphy at Wellington. "There were sufficient forthcoming to enable the establishment of an instruction class of 50 selected candidates, and within eix months this number of young telegraphists should be available to fill the gaps. To start, they are paid £4O per annum, and on appointment to a country centre will receive £SO and lodging allowance of £23. The boys who are being put on are taken from the telegraph branch after learning to send messages at a slow speed. _ Then they receive two months' special tuition before appointment as operators. < A large school for boys has been in existence for sonio time, and they have been turned out as fairly capable 'operators at the rate of 50 every two months.
Messrs Knox Bros.' thrashing-mill, while operating in the Methven district recently on Mr Robert Middleton's farm, established what is considered a record for any one day's thrashing this season. The mill thrashed 1700 bushels of wheat in 10 hours, and a field of 90 acros yielded 50 bushels per acre. The sample was the best the mill had thrashed this season. Messrs Knox have now completed thrashing for this season, having put through 100,000 bushels.
