FIRES.

A two-storeyed, eight-roomed wooden house situated on the hill at the rear of the new gasometer was totally destroyed by fire about 3.30 on Saturday morning. It is understood that a constable on duty gave the alarm, but the flames were then shooting from the kitchen, and when tho City and South Dunedin Brigades arrived almost simultaneously the Jiouse was completely enveloped. The building was owned and occupied by Mr John Lewis Price, gas inspector, in the employ of the City Corporation, and it would appear that both he and Mrs Price had to make a hurried escape. Mr Price was burned about the hands, face, and feet, and had to be taken to the Dunedin Hospital, where he is doing as well as can be expected. He is also suffering from shock. Mrs Price sustained an injury to her ankle. The water supply was only fair. The City Brigade took in two leads from the Cavcrsham Hill, while tho South Dunedin men took one up the hill from the King Edward street side, having to face a fairly heavy climb. The house was, however, doomed from the start, and the brigade had to be satisfied with keeping tho flames from tho adjoining premises. An adjoining house, occupied by Mr Morgan, suffered damage to the roof through a spark igniting the woodwork. Mr Trice had his house insured in the Standard office for £7OO. The offico in which the contents were insured and tho amount of the insurance, have not so far been ascertainable. A fire broke out on Sunday afternoon at the Milburn Lime and Cement Company's works at Pelichet Bay. The outbreak was extinguished by tho employees, the brigade not being called in. The fire started near t coal bin, and a little belting and the side of a wall were burned The damage is estimated at about £2O.
