RAILWAY FATALITY.
CHRIiSTCHURCII, April 7.
An inquest was held to-day on the body of James Walls, shunter, who was killed at the Christ-church railway station yesterday. Air J. P. Matheson, goous_ agent, stated that, in his opinion, the accident was due to inadvertence on the part of the unfortunate man. Deceased walked in front of some movaig wagons, which knocked him over. He kept within the jfails instead of keeping at the side. Deceased was a healthy and practically "fit" man. Witness knew that deceased had asked to bo relieved of shunting duties. Witness told him he had been engaged as a shunter, but gave him light work. The department, however, held that, as deceased was engaged as a shunter, and, as ho was fit for shunting work, he should do it. Witness told deceased this decision, and deceased agreed to it. Deceased was hit by the wagon:? before he turned round. His foot caught in a switch. Deceased, when witness came up, said to witness: "I told you, Mr Matheson, this shunting would get mo down." Deceasod must have lost confidence in himself. The coroner returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally killed, being run over by a railway truck.
