CASUALTIES.

Information was received by the police late on the 4th instant that a man, believed to be John W. Mackintosh (or MTntosh), 73 years of age, expired at 5 p.m. while following 1 his employment as a carpenter with Mr West, of Bishopscourt. Dr Miller, who was called, pronounced life to be extinct, and the body was removed to the morgue. A card of the Carpenters' Union, found upon deceased, gave the name "W. B. Mackintosh 440 Princes street." The man was a boarder at a boarding-house in "The Willows," near the Oval. A serious accident occurred on board the steamer Ngapuhi on her return from The Mount to the Town wharf (says the Tauranga correspondent of the New Zealand Herald). When mooring to the wharf one of the crew became entangled in the hawser, which was being wound by the winch. His logs were terribly mangled. He was taken to the hospital. Probably both legs will have to be amputated. Mr William Baxter Simpson, a, married man, 38 years of_ age, was knocked down by a motor car in Wellington on the sth inst., and received injuries from which he died. The deceased was a commercial traveller.

A child named Thomas M'Lellan, aged one year and) 10 months, was admitted to the Hospital on the sth from Mosgiel, suffering from scalds on the head and arms caused by boiling water. The Director of Base Reeords has received cable advice that a sailor named G. Mathieson, on the hospital ship Marama, had his leg smashed. The limb had to be amputated. The unfortunate victim is reported to be doing well. Any person knowing the name and address of this man's next of kin is requested to notify the Base Records Office, Wellington.

Michael Cowan, aged 58 years, a cattle driver, was rushed by an animal in a mob he was driving at Riccarton on the 6th. The horse was gored and threw Cowan, who fell on his head and broke his neck. A motor car accident occurred near Papakaio, 15 miles from Oamaru, on the 6th instant, when Mr _ Geo. Gardiner, tho well-known auctioneer for Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., at Oamaru, was killed as tho result of a collision with a dray. • Tho deceased, who was 30 years of age. belonged to Gore. He had enlisted for the Sixteenth Reinforcements.

Mrs Lawrence, a victim of the fire on tho 3rd inst., at Palmerston North, died next day. On the 6th instant Mr M'Connell Hayes, of Mokai, Rotorua, reported to tho polico that one of his children was dead, and that four others wore seriously ill. Dr Bertram went out, and found that tho children were apparently suffering from acute enteritis. Ho ascertained that they had eaten some raw mushrooms, and they may have oaten fungus, tho symptoms being consistent with poisoning. Ono child, namdti Rone, aged three \ ears and 11 months, died on the 4th, and another named Vernon, aged 16 months, died late on the 6th. A third child (Lindsay, aged Zi, years) died on the 9th inst. Mr Archibald Thomson, stevedore for Messrs Gannaway and Co., Wellington, died on the 7th inst from shock, following an accidental fall into tho harbour.

A railway shunter named James Wells, whilo shunting at Christchuroh on tho 7th inst.., and a line of trucks passed over both

his legs. Ho was taken to the hospital, where ho died the same evening. The accident was caused by his foot being caught between a switcli and a rail.

On tho 7th inst. a boy named George Allan Hall was admitted to the Dunedin Hospital, suffering from a fractured arm, caused by a fall. He is progressing as well as could bo expected. A rather serious accident befell Mr F. Robertson, builder, of Lawrenca, on the 6th inst. (writes our correspondent). He was returning to Lawrenco from German Flat on a bicyolOj and when nearing the foot of Moore's Hdl he ran Into Mr George Linklater's motor car. Tho bicycle struck tho front wheel of tho car, and Mr Robertson was thrown violently to the side of the road, sustaining a compound fracture of the left arm and a badly bruised hip. Medical aid was quickly summoned, and the sufferer was convoyed to tho Tuapeka Hospital, where he is doing as well as can bo expected. A single man named John Downing was found dead in a well at Ophir on the Bth instant with his throat cut. Downing was 53 year 3 of age. William Carr, a young man, employed by tho xiritislh Electric Company, while working on tho roof of the Mornington Catholic Church on the 10th instant fell to tho ground, a distanco of 18ft, and received some severe cuts about the eye. He was taken to the Hospital, where ho was attended to, and then left that institution.
