SUVLA AND ANZAC.
EVACUATED BY OUR TROOPS. LOSSES NEGLIGIBLE. MEN GOING ELSEWHERE. NO DESTINATION GIVEN. LONDON, December 20. (Received December 21, at 8.15 a.m.) The War Office announces that all our troops at Suvla and Anzac, with their guns and stores, have been transferred elsewhere with insignificant casualties. The abandonment of Anzac and Suvla is the sensation of the day. The newspapers were hurriedly bought up as the newsboys, with placards, dashed through the streets. Later editions were in equal demand, in the hope that they would contain details beyond the bald War Office announcement. There is much speculation as to whether this is the prelude to the complete evacuation of Gallipoli, also whether the men from Anzac will be given a temporary rest in protecting the Suez Canal, or will be transferred to Salonika forthwith. Hie newspapers are unanimous in emphasising the services of the Australians and New Zealanders. His Excellency the Governor has received the following cablegram from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, dated London, December 20 : In order that they may take part in other operations, all troops have been transferred from Suvla and Anzac. The transfer was effected without loss, either of personnel or material.
