GERMAN RECKLESSNESS.
STRIPPING VILNA CHURCHES. PETROGRAD, October 30. The Germans commandeered all the metal at Vilna, and the troops collected everything to the last nail, the population not resisting till they began to strip the churches, and then enormous crowds gathered at night, armed with grenades and bombs. When the soldiers began to strip the churches in the early morning the crowd attacked them, and terrible and bloody combats occurred in the streets for two days, many soldiers and civilians being killed. RECENT GERMAN FAILURES. PETROGRAD, October 29. The failure of the Germans to take Dvinsk and Riga is attributed to a shortage of ammunition, which is said to be becoming critical. RUSSIAN SOCIALISTS. LONDON, October 29. A French wireless message states that the Russian Socialist leaders have issued a proclamation in Moscow and Petrograd urging the working men, peasants, and wage-earners to abstain from anything likely either directly or indirectly to assist the enemy. The Socialists are united in the belief that a German victory would mean the defeat of the Russian Socialists in their struggle for liberty.
CREDIT SOUGHT IN AMERICA. NEW YORK, October 30. The Russian Government is seeking to establish credit in the United States. It is reported that she is willing to pay 9 per cent, for a loan of from 50,000,000 to 100,000.000 dollars. THE CZAR AND CZAREVITCH. PETROGRAD, October 30. The Czar and Czarevitch visited the southern front. They reviewed the troops going into action, and distributed medals. Intense enthusiasm was aroused by the visit. VON MACKENSEN REWARDED. LONDON, October 29. The Kaiser has appointed General von Mackensen a member of the Chapter of the Cathedral at Merseburg, carrying a salary of £2OOO per annum.
