PUBLIC SERVANTS’ LOYALTY
LARGE ENLISTMENTS, (Feom Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, October 5. A return was laid before Parliament today’ showing: (1) The number of employees in the public service who have volunteered, and have been accepted for active service; (2) the total number of male employees in tho public sendee; and 13) tho total number of male employees in the public service between 20 and 40 years of age, setting forth those who are married and those who are unmarried. The numbers with respect to the various questions were: — No. 1. —Under Public Service Commissioner’s control, 988; Railway Department, 1420. No. 2. —Under Commissioner’s control, 11,135; Railway Department, 11,429; Police Force, 900. No. 3.—Under Commissioner’s control, 2961 married, Railway Department; 4469 married and 3296 single; Police Force, 396 married and 180 single. It was announced from the first that the police would not be allowed to volunteer for active service, and therefore very fevv made written application for permission to serve. A number of members of the force resigned, and subsequently joined the Expeditionary Force, and are now at the front.
