MARINE OFFICERS.
ENLISTMENTS CAUSE DIFFICULTIES. (Fbom Oue Own Coeeespondent.) WELLINGTON, October 1. The Minister of Marine (the Hon. Dr M'Nab) was asked by Mr Poole whether he stated publicly in Wellington that he was prepared to allow vessels inadequately manned to go to sea. The Minister said he had made no such statement. He was referring to the great number of. officers who had left for the front, and he had stated that when the officers required by statute could not be obtained he would, rather than_ have the ships tied up, accept for the junior officers men who were qualified who might not have the statutory certificates. He had laid dowm the same policy before a deputation of the Federated Seamen’s Union, and he read the statement of Mr Young (the secretary of the union) that in certain cases he did not see any objection to dispensing with junior officers in certain cases. He was merely repeating what had been said by him to the seamen s denutation, and did not deal with the crew ? s of the vessels at all.
