HONOUR TO THE BRAVE
RETURNED SOLDIERS AT PORT CHALMERS. The Port Chalmers Town Hall was crowded to its utmost limits on 29th nit., when an official welcome was tendered to several brave lads, who have returned home bearing honourable scare gained in the service of their country. The Mayor (Mr T. Scollay) presided; and the proceedings were of the hearty and enthusiastic nature common to audiences in Port Chalmers, while a strong undercurrent of patriotism was apparent throughout the gathering. A note of deep thankfulness for the safety of those who had returned also found a place, and the meeting was in many ways a significant and memorable one. The men in whose honour the gathering was held were Privates M'Pherson, M'Haffie, and Booth, who were present, and also . Privates Innes and Casey, who could not attend. All these have seen active service on the battlefields of the Empire, and have assisted in bringing honour to their town and to the dominion as a whole. The Mayor extended a hearty welcome to the men, and on his motion a- resolution of sympathy with the bereaved parents and families of fallen soldiers was carried, all present standing in silence. On behalf of the Port Chalmers Borough Council, C'rs Isbister and Mawson extended a very hearty welcome to the guests of the evening, and Mr D. A. Do Mans delivered a spirited address. The musical programme was of considerable merit, and was greatly enjoyed by all present.
