SOUTH ISLAND TRUNK RAILWAY.
SPEEDY COMPLETION URGED. WELLINGTON, September 29. The completion of the South Island Main Trunk railway lino was strongly urged by several members in the House to-night. During the debate on the second reading of the Railways Authorisation Bill. Mr M‘Callum and Mr G. Forbes spoke strongly on the matter, the latter remarking that only 70 or 80 miles of the South Island Main Trunk line remained to be completed. He thanked tho Minister of Public Works (the Hon. W. Fraser) and tho Government for having got an authorisation in the Bill for the construction of 13 miles of the line from the end of the Kekerangu line to tho Clarence River. This, he said, was evidence that there was no intention of abandoning the lino. It would, he was sure, pay its way if completed, and it would bo an important and necessary addition to tho railway system of the dominion.
Mr Hornsby urged the completion of the line.
The Minister, }n reply, said that he did not propose to deal with the matter just now in a speech, but would speak on it when the Public Works Statement was before the House.
