GOODS FROM GERMANY.

MILLION POUNDS’ WORTH IN 1914. WELLINGTON, September 28. The Minister of Finance (Sir Joseph Ward), in the course of a speech to-night made an interesting statement about New Zealand’s recent trade with countries that are now enemy countries. Until the begin l ning of 1914 the country of origin of goods imported was never known in Now Zealand, but after that the country of origin had to be stated. For the seven months of 1914 prior to the outbreak of war the value of the goods which the dominion imported from Germany was £1,015,000, from Austria £49,000, from Turkey £30.000, and from Asiatic Turkey £39.000. The Customs officials estimated that if the war had not broken out the importations from present enemy countries for the whole year would have been worth £1,700,000. &ir Joseph Ward added that he thought these imports would not be restored after the war was over, and if the 50 per. cent, extra tax notv proposed by the Government as a duty qn enemy goods was not sufficient to keep theif-e goods out, the tax could bo increased.
