MELBOURNE, July 15. • The Makarini has arrived from London, carrying 14,000 tons of cargo, the largest ever despatched to Australasia. A reciprocal arrangement has been reached making payment of compensation for the death of workmen available either in Victoria or New Zealand. • July 16. The half-yearly gold yield for Australia was 975,0190 z, a decrease of 48,2550 z. From June 10, 1914, to June 7, 1915, the Mount Lyell converters produced 593 tons of copper, 39,6930 z of silver, and 7970 z of gold. July 17. The Croydon Hotel was destroyed by fire, and a man named Samuel Egan was incinerated. July 19. The oversea imports into Victoria for the half-year ended June 30 decreased by 392,324,775, and the exports decreased by £2.234,746. SYDNEY, July 13. A proclamation will be issued on Monday next increasing the prices of flour from £ls 17s 6d to £l7 5s per ton, and bread Id per loaf. Austin James Denny, a native of New Zealand, committed suicide by cutting his throat. July 14. The New South Wales Legislative Assembly adjourned out of respect for the death of Mr M'Farlane, member for the Clarence. Rain and thunderstorms -have occurred in the north-eastern districts. The Government does not propose to compulsorily acquire the sugar crop, but is prepared to pay £lB per ton if farmers desire to sell. The value of the crop is estimated at £400,000. The price of butter has been increased by Id per pound all round. The trawler trouble has been settled by
' the Government yielding to the firemen’ demands. Mr Black proposes to bulk immediately three wooden trawlers, fitter with oil engines requiring no firemen, and saving £I7OO per annum in wages and fuel. Further record prices for cattle and beef were reported at Homebush to-day. Shorthorn bullocks fetched £37 15s per head, and beef realised 70s to 75s per cwt. ‘ July 17. i Butter has increased a ‘‘penny all round, and milk has increased twopence a gallon. ! The Farmers’ Union Conference passed ! a resolution to take all means in their I power to prevent a recurrence of the wheat “grab” or any interference with primary 1 industries. The motion affirmed that when | the Government requires the products of 1 such industries they shall purchase them at the world’s market value. July 19. Beneficial rains have fallen over the whole State. ADELAIDE, July 13. South Australia is adopting the price of 3d per lb for sugar. BRISBANE, July 14. The State Governor opened the Queens- ; land Parliament. The legislation foreshadowed includes the establishment of , industrial boards of the Arbitration Court and the discouragement of large estates. | It was announced that any sheep for export from Queensland have been reserved by the State Government. July 16. The price of flour has increased by £1 1 per ton—to £l7, ss. Bran and pollard i have decreased by £2 per ton —to £9. July 17. Owing to the continued drought it is feared the sugar crop will be considerably less than was estimated. PERTH, July 14. The State revenue for the year was £4.181,812, being a decrease of £23,531 July 19.. At the Government’s instigation, the West Australian Turf Club is considerably I reducing the number of racing fixtures in the ensuing six months. HOBART, July 14. The State revenue for the year was £1,225,956, being a decrease of £13,868.
