HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS RELIEF COMMITTEE.
A meeting of gentlemen interested in the above subject took place at tho Excelsior Hotel on the 12th inst., with the result that an influential committee lias been formed, composed mainly of members of the various Scottish societies in Dunedin, with the chief of the Gaelic Society (Mr Dugald MTherson) as president, and Mr J. D. Cameron treasurer. The object is to collect funds for the relief of distress among women, old men, and children in tho Highlands and Islands of Scotland, caused by tho spontaneous answer of all able-bodied men to the call to join tire army and navy in defence of King and Empire. Mr W. G. MacGregor and the secretary (Mr John M‘finch lan) were instructed to compose a, circular letter for distribution. Tho mooting adjourned till the 22nd inst., when the final arrangements will be made preparatory to commencing operations on tho completion of the Queens’ Carnival. Several ladies have already volunteered their services, and their _ assistance will materially help in a deserving cause.
