FIRE ON A STEAMER.
INCENDIARISM SUSPECTED. WELLINGTON, July 15. A fire was discovered at 11.30 this morning in tho forehold of tho steamer Caldergrove, loaded with case oil from Philadelphia. The hold, which was half full of benzoline, had not been worked this morning, but half an hour before some of the crew had been working below. The hatch was left open for ventilation, and a little smoke was seen coming out. Two loads of tho ship’s hose were taken down to the hold. The Fire Brigade was called, and fire was found among a quantity of paper and tow between the outer row of cases and tho ship’s side, evidently placed there -with intent to start a blaze. Tho fire was extinguished when the ends of nine of the cases had been charred. Had the blaze progressed much further the ship would probably have boon blown up.
